Our History

Cheyne Presbyterian Church is an evangelical Christian Church that strives to honour its past and embrace its future! We are a part of a great movement of God within The Presbyterian Church in Canada. Our roots run deep, all the way back to the Church of Scotland in the 1500’s. John Knox, a Scottish clergyman and a leader of the Protestant Reformation, is considered to be the founder of the Presbyterian movement. Our Canadian heritage includes the work and witness of Protestant settlers who came to Canada in the 1600s. In 1875 several groups of Presbyterians formed a union and called themselves The Presbyterian Church In Canada. Our denomination has been independent since that time.

Cheyne Presbyterian Church was founded by and named in honour of one of Canada’s pioneer Presbyterian ministers, Rev. George Cheyne, M.A. George Cheyne was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland in July 1802. He graduated as M.A. in 1822 and taught school until he was ordained into the Presbyterian Church on July 6th, 1831. He then answered the call of God and sailed immediately for Canada; a voyage which took six weeks! He proceeded to Amherstburg, where he provided spiritual leadership for an area of 100 square miles. This proved too much and ill health led him to transfer to the charge of Saltfleet and Binbrook in July 1843.

In 1844, a church was built a mile and a half east of Albion Falls in Saltfleet, and was named after Rev. Cheyne. He worked tirelessly and passionately to serve Jesus in the community until his death in April 1878. His commitment and faithfulness continues on today; over 170 years of support and ministry to the community of Stoney Creek!

When John Knox felt the call of God on His life to spread the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ to his country, he prayed, “God, give me Scotland or I’ll die!” His passion to see people come to know Jesus is what still inspires us today to be a church that shares the love and grace of Jesus to our community and our world and to grow as fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

We hope you’ll join us on this amazing journey to know God and make Him known!
